THE PARIS NEWS, Mon., Aug. 4, 1997, p. 1A: '(Pictures) MAN DROWNS IN LAKE CROOK MISHAP - Rescue Workers Drag The Body of David Camp To Shore in a Body Bag - An Emory man fell out of a boat Saturday night on Lake Crook and drowned after he was apparently struck in the head with the motor's propeller. Paris fire department divers dragged the lake and the victim's body was recovered some 24 hours later at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday.
David Camp, 36, was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace David Merrill.
Paris police and Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden Greg Williford investigated the scene after witnesses reported the incident at the police department. According to police reports, Camp and a woman got into a boat and crossed the lake to the northwest. Witnesses said it appeared the boat was approximately 150 yards from the shore. A witness said he saw a body fly from the boat and then observed the person left in the boat attempt to paddle to shore. An unknown person in a second boat retrieved Camp's boat with the woman still aboard. The woman told police Camp had been ejected while trying to save her from falling overboard. She said the boat 'ran over him,' and that she saw lacerations to Camp's head and back as he bobbed in an attempt to submerge himself before finally sinking out of view. Lt. Randy Tuttle said no criminal charges are expected. Merritt ruled Camp's death accidental and did not order an autopsy.'

photographer Woodfin Camp dies at 85

Retired Globe-News Chief Photographer Woodfin Camp died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in Amarillo. He was 85.

No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.

Mr. Camp was a second-generation Globe-News staffer. His father, Grady Woodfin Camp, retired as business manager of the Globe-News in 1970 at age 80. Grady Camp died in 1986 at age 96.

Woodfin Camp was a native of Amarillo who spent his entire career at the Globe-News. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1932 and Amarillo College in 1934.

He joined the staff in 1936 in the advertising department, handling national and local advertising accounts. For eight years he worked in advertising, shooting news photos whenever he could.

He always carried a camera, but at first it was for advertising photographs rather than news pictures. When a big news story broke, Mr. Camp would grab the cumbersome 4x5 cut-film camera and dash to the scene. After photographing the event, he would return to his advertising desk and send the film out to be processed and have prints made.

"That was the news photography `department' for quite a while," Mr. Camp said in an interview when he retired in 1980. "It was a part-time, go-when-you-can and get-back-to-your-real-job-as-quickly-as-possible operation."

At the end of 1945 and after World War II, photography became a more important part of the news operation and Mr. Camp set up the Globe-News photography department.

"Flash bulbs had made their entry into the world of photography only a few years earlier," he recalled in 1980. "Some of the first ones were pretty crude. Filaments were made of foil instead of wire, and uniformity of brightness was not a virtue of the first bulbs."

Mr. Camp said he used flash powder before bulbs were available, "but I don't go all the way back into that era - just to the end of it."

During his 35 years as head of the newspaper's photography department, Mr. Camp watched the evolution of electronic technology from early flash bulbs to automatic recycling electronic flash guns, and from the cumbersome 4x5 cut film cameras to motor-driven 35-millimeter cameras.

During these same years, he walked through the halls and ballrooms of the Panhandle's wealthy and powerful to photograph major social events and through tornado alley during some of the most devastating storms to sweep through the area.

Mr. Camp also covered the Strategic Air Command's world bomb competition in 1965 and again in 1966 at Spokane, Wash. In 1961, he photographed a test missile blast off at White Sands, N.M., and the same year was present with his camera for the federal government's Project Gnome - the explosion of the first peacetime underground atomic blast - at Carlsbad, N.M.

He covered the great Alaskan earthquake in 1964, toured Europe with his camera for the paper, in 1961, and covered every major tornado across the Golden Spread since he established the photography department.

He was a member of the National Press Photographers Association and a member and past president of the Amarillo Press Photographers Association.

Mr. Camp was married to the former Sophia Anise Selvidge on Aug. 27, 1938, in Amarillo. She died Sept. 25, 1991.

Survivors include a daughter, Sophia Anise Camp Burns of Amarillo; two sons, George Selvidge Camp of Houston and Grady Woodfin Camp III of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Mary Elizabeth Spurlock of Arkansas and Sharon Clifton and Candace Pauline Camp, both of Texas; a brother, Robert Stephen Camp of North Carolina; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Their son, Woodfin Camp III, followed in his father's footsteps as the owner of Woodfin Camp Inc., photographic agents in New York. "I've had an exciting and even sometimes colorful career," Mr. Camp said in 1980. "And I've enjoyed every minute of it."

The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176-0001. Amarillo Daily News, March 15, 2001
